Country people have something of an obsession with obituaries. Longtime country people subscribe to three newspapers – 1 weekly, 1 afternoon, 1 morning – so that they are aware of the death of every other country person they once played high school sports against, attended a church retreat with, or served with on the Lion’s Club district executive board. When country people travel to Wisconsin Dells or Las Vegas they assign a designee to read obituaries while they are gone so that they can be notified immediately after the passing of another country person. Obituaries are commonly clipped although the passing of someone who is particularly close to a country person requires the purchase of an additional newspaper so that one obituary can be taken to the “calling hours” and one can be kept at home in a shoebox.
With the advent on the online publication, my mom checks the online obituary section daily. This has allowed her to take trips in peace, knowing that she is still in control of the obituary checking.
Typo. I meant advent of the online publication. Why can’t you edit these comments?
You can’t forget the marriage announcements on the “society” page. That’s right up there with the obits.
